Summary

Clashing empires, forbidden romance, and a long-forgotten queen destined to save her people—bestselling author Tahereh Mafi’s first in an epic, romantic trilogy inspired by Persian mythology。

To all the world, Alizeh is a disposable servant, not the long-lost heir to an ancient Jinn kingdom forced to hide in plain sight。

The crown prince, Kamran, has heard the prophecies foretelling the death of his king。 But he could never have imagined that the servant girl with the strange eyes, the girl he can’t put out of his mind, would one day soon uproot his kingdom—and the world。

Perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo, Tomi Adeyemi, and Sabaa Tahir, this is the explosive first book in a new fantasy trilogy from the New York Times bestselling and National Book Award-nominated author Tahereh Mafi。

Quickly engaging, honestly unpredictable at times and left me wanting more, cannot wait for the next one in the series!

I’m completely blown away。 This is SUCH a vibrant book, a marriage between cinderella plot beats, howl’s moving castle whimsy, and south asian culture that’s just teeming with life。 The prose was absolutely beautiful and the pacing was just right! Thank god I’ll be able to get my hands on the sequel soon because that ending is equal parts hilarious and terrifying- I can’t wait to see what happens next!!

I find the involvement of Persian mythology incredible and I was fascinated by the presentation。 The atmosphere of the whole book was on point。 The pacing of the book however is too slow for my liking and made the first 250 pages a bit pointless。 Another thing that put me off is why 95% of every chapter starts with the name of the character。 There are more than a hundred ways to start a sentence and still understand which pov you're reading。。。" I think I might fetch you the moon if only to spare your tears again。 "What I'm extremely sad about is how flat the characters are。 I couldn't feel a connection with any of them and found them boring (except in the last few pages cause that's when things start to get interesting)。 The main character - Alizeh lacked the depth needed for her to become a great character, especially with already knowing her backstory。 Also since Jinn can turn invisible why doesn't she use it to steal things??? I'm so confused about that part。。。 Kamran is a bit more interesting and I believe his backstory is way more tragic than Alizeh's。 When it comes to the side characters this book failed to deliver them。 In the end, the book has great potential but lacks some essential elements to truly make it an unforgettable experience。 Still, it's an entertaining read and it's suitable for moments when you have nothing to read because of its writing and lightness。 I think 3 stars are well-deserved。" What a strange girl you are。。。to behold a rose and perceive only its thorns, never the bloom。 " 。。。more

The first book of 2023 is an absolute winner! Full of court intrigue and politics, tongue in cheek banter, an ancient prophecy, forbidden romance, conflicting empires and dark riddles - I adored this book! This is my first book by Mafi and it did not disappoint! The side characters were written beautifully and definitely added to this rich story。 I loved the complexities of Alizeh trying to survive in this world the only way she can while having to hide her true self。 She may appear as meek at first but make no mistake this is a woman made to be a queen😉There were at times where I felt some of the backstory with the main characters were a little long or explained a couple times more than necessary, but I’m saying that it did add to a very rich world that explains so much of these characters motivations, flaws, desires and hopes。And THAT ENDING。 Freaking loved it and cannot wait for book 2! Definitely recommend for prince of Persia meets Aladdin meets Bridgerton vibes ♥️ 。。。more

zoo wee mama。 what a book。 quite annoyed that i didn’t realise that no other books in the series have been released yet, but i can’t be too mad。 i’m definitely gonna go read the authors other series asap! this book had the perfect level of romance。 i’m a little worried that it’s going to follow a similar plot line to ACOTAR based on the ending, however, this book lived up to all my wants in a fantasy book。 love love love the protagonist。 am excited for the others in the series to be released!!

This is not a genre I would usually read but I was recommended this book by a friend。 I was pleasantly surprised by this book and I am looking forward to the second in the series。 Alizeh works as a simple servant。 She has very little & she expects very little although she speaks with great clarity and in a way that is not in keeping with that of a servant。 She holds a secret from her past that changes everything。 Tahereh Mafi’s writing style is one that is easy to follow and keeps the reader cap This is not a genre I would usually read but I was recommended this book by a friend。 I was pleasantly surprised by this book and I am looking forward to the second in the series。 Alizeh works as a simple servant。 She has very little & she expects very little although she speaks with great clarity and in a way that is not in keeping with that of a servant。 She holds a secret from her past that changes everything。 Tahereh Mafi’s writing style is one that is easy to follow and keeps the reader captivated and wanting more。 。。。more

He was whiny and judgmental so um, definitely didn't really see him and Alizeh clicking that well。 There was just less that drew me into his side of the story。 Then, as I mentioned, the dialogue was a bit heavy-handed at times。 I get the purpose is to make the characters sound like royalty or upper class, but it was a bit much。 This particular sentence stuck with me:"You are quite good," his grandfather said coldly, "at taking clear and logical arguments and elevating them to a level so esoteric they are rendered ineffectual。" I mean, the number of times I saw "epithet" in the book was astounding。 Despite those things, I'm curious to see what happens next。 。。。more

Serenity Dawn (The Story)

This book started out SLOW。 As an experienced author, I would think she would know how to write a bit more of a catchy beginning。 If I was more of a DNF'er and had not read a book series or two that I loved by her, I probably would have dropped this book and not picked it back up a few times。 I stuck it out and am glad that I did。 It definitely got better。 I REALLY liked the story before the end。 Looking forward to the second book in 2023。 4 exquisitely tailored outfits。 This book started out SLOW。 As an experienced author, I would think she would know how to write a bit more of a catchy beginning。 If I was more of a DNF'er and had not read a book series or two that I loved by her, I probably would have dropped this book and not picked it back up a few times。 I stuck it out and am glad that I did。 It definitely got better。 I REALLY liked the story before the end。 Looking forward to the second book in 2023。 4 exquisitely tailored outfits。 。。。more

But right now she's acting as a servant because she's an orphan。 So, Kam's grandfather (the King) wants Kamran to like suss her out。 He's fully planning on exposing her。。。then he sees her face up close for 5 full seconds and suddenly that all goes out the window。 Being distracted by hotness? C'mon ya'll。。。He knows absolutely jack shit about her except the fact that she's pretty and he's seen her be kind from a distance。 He's briefly convinced by his grandfather to snoop through her stuff, once again sure that he'll find something proving her guilt (guilt to what, I'm not even sure) but as soon as he sees that her room is neat and clean he does a 180 AGAIN and decides noooo she couldn't possibly be a nefarious criminal。 As soon as she walks in on him snooping through her stuff what commences is maybe the dumbest romance scene I've ever read in my life。 So Alizeh is like, reasonably freaked out by the prince being in her closet and won't leave and Kamran, prince among men, decides now the best time to flirt with a VERY unamused/freaked out Alizeh。 "You are the first to think me capable of such dichotomy。 I am in fact not know to possess to changeable a character, and I am forced to wonder whether the source of your frustration is rooted elsewhere。"like guy where do you THINK her frustration is rooted? get out of her closet! then some servant comes in and they're forced to hide and suddenly Alizeh can make themselves invisible because remember: long lost superhuman princess。 Then he does this, "The prince moved, suddenly, touched her as he shifted, his hands circling her waist。 He lifted her, just slightly, to adjust himself, but he made no effort to put space between their bodies。 In fact ,he drew her closer。 'I beg your pardon,' he whispered in her ear。 'But do you intend to sit on me in perpetuity。'" (page 325)。Then she has a panic attack because of the dark/enclosed space and Kamran says this, "'I see。 If you've constructed this falsehood merely to safeguard your modesty, you should know that it only undermines your intelligence, for the lie is too weak to be believed。 You would be better off simply admitting that if you find me attractive and wish to be near m-'" (page 327)。Then they argue (or """"banter"""") and in the darkness Kamran suddenly kisses her without warning almost directly after he first learns her name。 I am convinced every second that this is a fakeout romance (because I know this author's done that before) but also。。。I am not。 Towards the end of the book, Kamran thinks this about Alizeh, "Would anyone else ever make him feel as much? And if not, would he be cursed forever to live only a half-life, a life of quiet acquiescence, of unfulfilled expectations? Was it worse, he wondered, to never know what you might have- or worse to have it snatched away before you might have it?" (Page 442)。And this is hilarious considered the total time they have spent together does not even equal an hour and he's whining about having to marry a stranger when Alizeh is only about half a step up from a stranger。 It's just。。。baffling。 As for everyone and everything else。。。I dunno。 Kamran's the only element I felt any strong emotion towards (and that emotion happened to be annoyance)。 The rest is。。。eh? Alizeh- pretty bland。 She's just so nice and so selfless and pure as the driven snow and has like three dudes in love with her (including The Devil? I dunno that was such a strange background thing)。 As Kamran puts it, "。。。he would have understood had she been withdrawn and cynical, but she was instead vibrant with feeling, alive in every emotion, mercifully giving of herself in all ways。" (page 345)。 Because god FORBID an abused servant dare be unhappy or jaded in any sort of way。 Coming from a certifiable 'goody goody', Alizeh is too fucking nice。 And the ONE TIME she grows a backbone and does ANYTHING- she slaps this Cyrus dude in the face because he murdered the king after revealing he had been eating children's brains???? Like GIRL did you NOT just hear the part about the kid's brains? what did you think that was going to do???Hazan- probably my favorite character。 like he's not amazing or anything but at least he has an ounce of snark inside him。 I may be the only person in the world who ships Alizeh and Hazan because they had more chemistry than Alizeh had with Kamran (or Cyrus who just randomly shows up in the last 80% of the book) but no he can't be considered a love interest because he isn't 'violently handsome' like all the other dudes。 He's probably going to die or something。 Miss Huda- another random side character who I liked more than any other main because like。。。at the bare minimum she's kinda funny。 But is she a friend to Alizeh? Of course not。 She has FLAWS (an unfamiliar concept to Alizeh)。 She's a fat character whose depicted to be untrustworthy and insecure so she's not allowed to be friends with the main character。 Blehhhh。 Cyrus- I dunno! He showed up 80% in and was talked about maybe once prior to him showing up。 I think he might be like。。。the actual endgame because I guess that's what Mafi did with Shatter Me。 He shows up, him and Alizeh have enemies to lovers type banter (I guess) then he swoops her up on his dragon (do not get me started on the fucking dragon) and tells her he's taking her away to marry her。Then she falls off the dragon。 The last line of this book is, "Alizeh gave a sharp cry, and fell off the dragon。" (page 495)。 That felt like the punchline the world's longest and weirdest joke。 I couldn't imagine a better ending line。 That's so bad it shoots right past being bad and goes back around to become hilarious。So。Did I kind of hate this book? Kind of。Was I entertained? Also kind of but for all the wrong reasons。 Am I going to read the next one? Of course I am。 。。。more

I liked the concept, the wordl-building and the characters - but the beginning was a bit slow and some aspects where a bit cheezy and predictable。 But i overall really enjoyed reading this book and I am looking forward to the where the story will go in the second book!
